July 31, 1958: Lomie Puckett stands guard to prevent bulldozers from leveling her Edendale house for the construction of the Golden State Freeway. Puckett wanted more money than offered for the house.

According to the Los Angeles Times, “The standoff lasted several days.”

The Google Street View images of 2nd Street and Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles are modern. The black-and white images are taken from film shot in 1947 and intended to be used as background images for a feature film. Shot from moving vehicle, these images would be projected behind mocks-up of cars on sound stages.

These six minutes of 35 millimeter film from the Internet Archive show a Downtown that no longer exists.
